We celebrate gallery spaces and the exhibits that are held within them, and rightly so. However, what is art worth if people don’t see it, connect with it, and enjoy it. In this set of images, the focus is not on the artwork or gallery spaces, not even on the individuals who view the work, but on our “Relationship to Art”.
By removing the space and distance between the viewer and the art, flattening the image, visual relationships are exposed. By making these connections stand out, we focus on the various ties between between the obscuring person, and the obscured art, rather than one or the other. This is after all the most important element within the arts. Without relationships “Between Us and Art” artwork would have no value, and more importantly no power.
Within this wider narrative, smaller questions are asked from image to image. Some photographs have very strong, clear visual relationships, some reverse the gaze back onto the obscuring viewer, and some ask questions about the prying role of the photographer.
